Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses offer a non-invasive, reversible solution for vision correction, providing clear vision without the use of daytime spectacles or contact lenses. It is a particularly valuable option for managing progressive myopia in children, and for adults seeking a flexible alternative to surgery. Designer Eyewear is among the few Optical Retailers in Singapore to offer Ortho-K. Feel free to consult us for more information on Ortho-K lenses.
What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses are specialised gas-permeable contact lenses that are extremely high oxygen permeable designed to temporarily reshape the cornea and reduce refractive errors such as myopia (near-sightedness). These lenses are typically worn overnight, allowing for clear vision in the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses.
How does Orthokeratology work?
Ortho-K lenses gently flatten the cornea while you sleep, altering the way light enters the eye and focusing it directly onto the retina but brings the mid-periphery light rays in front of the retina. This approach is based on the theory that periphery defocus will slow down the progress of eyeball elongation, thus slowing down myopia progression. This reshaping effect provides temporary correction of refractive errors after lens removal. The lenses are custom-fitted to each patient's corneal curvature, ensuring precise and effective vision correction.
Who can Benefit from Ortho-K?
Children and adolescents with progressive myopia: Ortho-K has been shown to slow the progression of myopia in young patients.
Individuals who engage in sports of activities where spectacles or daytime contact lenses may be inconvenient.
Safety and Efficacy
Ortho-K lenses are safe for both children and adults when fitted and used under professional guidance. Like all other contact lenses, maintaining proper hygiene is essential to prevent complications such as eye infections. Regular follow-up appointments with an eye care professional are necessary to monitor corneal health and ensure continued efficacy.
